How do I cancel a customer's subscription?

Cancel one subscription from its page in Contracts, or several at once, and what your customer gets when you do.

You can cancel any active or paused subscription from its page in the Subi admin. Before anything is cancelled, Subi shows you a few ways to keep the subscription going, in case your customer only needs a break.

How do I cancel one subscription?

1. In Subi, go to Contracts and click the subscription you want to cancel.

2. At the top of the subscription's page, click Cancel. You see it on active and paused subscriptions.

3. Subi opens Before you cancel subscription, with options that keep the subscription active: move the next order to a date you choose, skip the next order, pause it for 2 or 3 orders, or send your customer a portal link where they can change how often they receive it. Which options you see depends on the subscription. Click one to keep the subscription, or click Cancel anyway.

4. If you like, choose why you are cancelling, for example Customer request or Test, duplicate, or fraud. Once you pick a reason, you can also add a note of up to 280 characters. Both are optional and only for your own records. Your customer never sees them.

5. Click Cancel subscription. Subi shows Subscription cancelled successfully.

What if the last payment failed?

When the subscription's last payment failed and payment retries are running, the same window says so at the top. Cancelling (or pausing) stops those retries. If your customer just needs to update their card, click Send link under Request a new card instead, and your customer gets an email with a secure link to update their payment details.

What happens when I cancel?

Subi stops billing the subscription, so your customer is not charged for it again and no new orders are created from it.

If the Subscription cancelled email is turned on in your notification settings, Subi emails your customer that their subscription is cancelled. To check it, see How to Enable Email Notifications in Subi.

If you have connected Klaviyo or Shopify Flow, or set up webhooks, they receive the cancellation too.

Should I pause instead?

If your customer wants a break rather than to stop for good, pause the subscription instead. When the Before you cancel subscription window offers it, you can pause for 2 or 3 orders right there. The subscription keeps your customer's payment details and starts again on its own, and its next order is on the date shown on the button. If the Paused subscription starts again soon email is on in your notification settings, your customer gets a reminder before it does.

Can I cancel several subscriptions at once?

Yes, if your Subi plan includes bulk actions (Free and Starter do not). In Contracts, tick the subscriptions you want, click Update status and choose Cancelled. Subi suggests Pause instead, and you can still go ahead with the cancellation. The steps are in How to Bulk Edit Subscription Contracts.

Can my customers cancel on their own?

Yes, from their customer portal, if your portal settings let them. You choose that in Manage Customer Portal Permissions in Subi. To offer them other options when they try to cancel, see How to Reduce Cancellations with a Cancellation Flow.
