How to Set Up a Loyalty Program in Subi

Configure earning methods, reward tiers, and customer redemption options for your Shopify loyalty program using Subi.

✨ Only available on Subi and Subi Plus plans.

The Loyalty Program feature allows you to reward your customers for repeat purchases and engagement, helping enhance customer retention and loyalty. Setting up this program in your Shopify store using Subi is simple and straightforward.

Where to find it: open Subi > Retention and click the Loyalty program tile. Loyalty no longer appears as a top-level nav item — it now lives inside the Retention hub. Old /loyalty bookmarks and any direct links to the Loyalty page still work.

The Loyalty Program page at a glance

Open Subi > Retention and click the Loyalty program tile. The page has five tabs: Configuration (earn methods, rewards, social follow and the setup checklist), Customers (every customer's points balance), Referrals (shown once the Refer a friend earn method is available for your store and switched on), Analytics and Settings. On a plan that does not include the loyalty program only Configuration is open; the other tabs are greyed out.

Next to the title, a status badge reads Not set up (the program has never been turned on), Active, or Paused. The main button changes with it: Activate, Pause, or Reactivate. Watch how, the first button at the top, plays a short video of setting up the program. The Preview customer view button sits beside the main button, and while the loyalty setup guide is showing, a Guides menu holds How it works, a short introduction to the feature.

Until the program has been turned on for the first time, the Configuration tab starts with a card titled Your loyalty program is not running. It says that nothing below is live for your customers yet and lists 0 members, 0 points issued and 0 rewards redeemed, because a program that has never been active cannot have any. If your plan does not include loyalty, the same card names the plan that includes it and that plan's monthly price, and you can still open the customer preview before you upgrade.

Step 1: Configure Earning Methods

Define how your customers will earn points:

  • Open Subi Subscriptions App → Retention → Loyalty program.

  • Navigate to the Earn Methods section.

  • Activate/deactivate and configure earning methods:

    • Place an order (one-time): Set points earned per dollar spent (e.g., 10 point per $1).

    • Place an order (subscriptions): Set points earned per dollar spent for subscription orders (e.g., 20 points per $1). (We recommend offering more points for subscriptions to boost recurring orders.)

    • Signup bonus: Offer points when a customer creates a new account (e.g.,
      200 points).

    • Birthday bonus: Reward your customers on their special day! You can define a specific point value to be gifted on their birthday. Customers simply need to enter their birth date (day and month) through the Loyalty Extension on their customer account page. Every year on that exact date, the system will automatically add the designated points to their loyalty balance, allowing them to redeem it for rewards.

Step 1b: Set Up Social Follow (Optional)

Reward your customers with bonus points for following your brand on social media. This is a great way to grow your audience while keeping customers engaged with your loyalty program.

How to add social media platforms

  1. In your Subi admin, go to Retention > Loyalty program

  2. Scroll down to the Earn Methods section

  3. Click Add Earn Method

  1. In the modal, choose the platform under Earn method (Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, or Pinterest)

  2. Enter your username (e.g., yourstore for instagram.com/yourstore)

  3. Set the Points to award when a customer follows

  4. Click Save

Add Social Follow window with the Earn method dropdown, the username field and Points to award

Tip: You can add up to 6 platforms. Each platform can only be added once.

Managing social follow platforms

  • Toggle on/off — Use the switch to temporarily enable or disable a platform without deleting it

  • Edit — Update the username or points for an existing platform

  • Delete — Remove a platform entirely

How customers earn points

When a customer visits their account page, they'll see a Follow us card listing your social media profiles. Each platform shows how many points they can earn.

After clicking Follow, your social profile opens in a new tab and the points are added to the customer's balance right away, with a banner such as 50 points added to your balance. Subi cannot check whether the customer actually followed you: the card tells customers that points are added when they open a profile and asks them to follow you while they are there.

A platform the customer has already claimed shows Points added in place of the points, with a Visit link that still opens your profile. Each platform can be claimed once per customer; a second attempt shows You've already earned points for this platform.

Step 2: Set Up Rewards

Rewards encourage customer engagement and repeated interactions. Set up rewards by:

  • Open Subi Subscriptions App → Retention → Loyalty program.

  • Navigate to the Rewards section.

  • Click Add Reward in the Rewards section.

  • Customize reward details:

    • Reward type: Choose from fixed discounts, percentage discounts, or free shipping (more reward types are coming soon).

    • Coupon value: Enter the discount amount (e.g., $10 off, 15% off).

    • Required points: Specify how many points customers need to redeem this reward.

    • Min. Order Value: An optional amount required for the reward to apply.

After entering details, click Save. You can edit or remove rewards anytime.

Step 3: Enable Subi’s App Embed

Activate the Subi widget on your Shopify store:

  • Go to your Shopify theme settings > App embeds.

  • Turn on Subi (Subi Subscriptions) and click Save

This feature enables us to display the loyalty widgets throughout your customer's shopping experience.

Step 4: Add Loyalty Widget to Customer Accounts

Allow customers easy access to their loyalty information via the customer account:

  • Visit the Shopify theme settings by clicking here.

  • Find and activate the Subi Subscriptions > Customer Loyalty Portal Extension and add it to the Orders page.

  • Ensure you place it appropriately in the customer account.

  • Click Save to confirm.

Check both from the Storefront delivery card

Once you have completed or dismissed the setup checklist, the Configuration tab shows a Storefront delivery card with one row for the Subi app embed and one for the Customer account extension. Each row reads On or Requires setup. A row that needs setup shows Customers can't see their points until this is set up. with an Enable app embed or Customize Theme button and a Setup guide link that opens the matching guide.

The card opens collapsed when both rows are On and expanded while either row still needs setup. Use Show delivery details and Hide delivery details to change that; Subi remembers your choice. The extension row can only be checked from inside the Shopify admin, so it reads Unknown if you open Subi any other way.

Step 5: Activate Your Loyalty Program

Ensure you've created at least one earning method and one reward before activating:

  • Open your Subi Subscriptions App → Retention → Loyalty program.

  • Click Activate to officially launch your Loyalty Program.

Program statuses:

  • Not set up: the program has never been activated. The button reads Activate.

  • Active: currently running and fully functional. The button reads Pause.

  • Paused: temporarily stopped (customers won't earn or redeem points, but existing points are preserved). The button reads Reactivate.

Preview what your customers will see

Click Preview customer view at the top of the Loyalty Program page to open the Customer view preview. It reproduces the loyalty section of the Shopify customer account from your own earn methods and rewards, in the wording customers see (for example 10% OFF Coupon or Free Delivery). The points balance carries a Sample badge: it is set to your cheapest reward so you can read the rewards as a customer with just enough points to spend, and every real customer sees their own balance, coupons and pending points instead.

The preview tells you when customers cannot see any of it yet: while the program is not active, and while the customer account extension has not been added. Open in customer account editor takes you to the Shopify editor to add it. The preview also works on a plan that does not include the loyalty program, so you can judge the feature before upgrading.

Announce your program to your existing customers

Subi never emails your customers about a new loyalty program. Instead, once your program is Active with at least one reward and an active earn method (orders, signup or birthday), the Configuration tab shows an Announce your program card. Click Get announcement content to open the Announcement content window, which holds a Subject line, an Email body and an HTML version, each with its own copy button.

The content is written from your real settings. The subject is Your [store name] orders now earn points, or Your [store name] account now earns points when orders do not earn points. The body states each earn rate per unit of currency spent on products, and lists your rewards starting with the cheapest, up to three of them, each with its minimum order value. Paste it into Klaviyo, Shopify Email or whichever tool you already use and send it yourself; edit it as much as you like, because Subi keeps no copy and tracks nothing.

Customer Experience

Customers can view and manage their loyalty points and available rewards directly in their accounts. Subi emails them when they earn or redeem points; you choose which of those emails go out under Settings > Notifications, in the Loyalty email notifications card (see How to Enable Email Notifications in Subi).

Product Page Loyalty Widget

Once the Subi app embed is enabled, your customers will see how much point they’ll earn by purchasing each product on its product page. To hide the display of the loyalty widget from the product page, navigate to Subi > Retention > Loyalty program > Settings (Tab) > Widgets.

See who has points: the Customers and Referrals tabs

The Customers tab lists every customer who has earned points, with their current balance, lifetime earned and redeemed totals, and last activity. A banner at the top, View customer points balance, reminds you that the same balance shows in each customer's Shopify customer details: Go to Customers page opens your Shopify Customers page, and Learn more explains how to add the Subi block there. Full details in How do I see a customer's loyalty points balance in Subi?.

The Referrals tab appears once the Refer a friend earn method is available for your store and switched on. While there are no referrals yet, Promote referrals opens the Refer a friend settings. See How do I set up customer referrals (Refer a friend) in my Subi loyalty program?.

Read the Analytics tab

The Analytics tab shows whether your program is working, from Subi's own points records. Pick a date range at the top: it opens on the last 30 days and covers up to 731 days at a time. Four cards follow: Points issued, Redemptions, Active members (customers with at least one confirmed points transaction in the range) and Redemption rate, which is points redeemed divided by points issued. For example, 3,000 points issued and 600 points redeemed give a redemption rate of 20%. Each card compares the range with the period of the same length just before it, shown as Compared with those dates.

Below the cards, the Points issued vs. redeemed chart plots both series over the range, by day, week or month depending on its length, and the Redemptions by reward type table lists Claims, Share and Points value for each reward type. Its claims add up to the Redemptions card exactly; redemptions whose reward details are no longer available appear on an Other row. A program with no points activity yet shows No loyalty activity yet rather than zeroes. Analytics needs a plan that includes the loyalty program.

Use loyalty at the register: the Shopify POS card

Every plan that includes the loyalty program also includes loyalty in Shopify POS. After the setup checklist, the Configuration tab shows a Shopify POS card: staff can look up a customer's points balance and redeem rewards at the register once the Subi Loyalty tile is on your POS smart grid. The card reads On when the tile has been added and Requires setup when it has not (Staff can't see or redeem points in store until the tile is added to the smart grid.); Manage POS tile opens the Point of Sale channel in your Shopify admin. How the tile works in store: How do I use Subi Loyalty in Shopify POS?

Pausing or Reactivating Your Loyalty Program

You can pause your Loyalty Program at any time. While paused, customers cannot earn or redeem points, but existing points remain intact. Simply reactivate the program when ready.

Adjusting Customer Points

In order to adjust the points of a specific customer, you should follow these steps:

  • Go to the 'Customers' page

  • Select the customer you intent to adjust their points

  • Scroll to 'Blocks' and click on '+ Block' to add 'Customer Loyalty Manager Extension'

  • Ensure to pin the block so you always have access to it

  • Click Edit Points, enter the new balance and click Save. The customer is emailed about the updated balance.

Recording: adding the Customer Loyalty Manager Extension block to a customer page, pinning it and editing the points balance

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Widgets Not Displaying Correctly?

    • Confirm Subi App Embed is activated in your Shopify theme settings.

    • Ensure that the Customer Account Extension is correctly added to the customer account in your Shopify theme settings.

  • The Storefront delivery card says Requires setup?

    • Use the button on that row (Enable app embed or Customize Theme) and follow its Setup guide; the row turns to On once the change is live.

    • An Unknown extension row only means you opened Subi outside the Shopify admin; open it from the admin to see the real status.
