How do you connect Subi to Mailchimp? You can connect Mailchimp straight from Subi, so Mailchimp receives your subscription events and subscriber fields and you can build journeys on them. If your plan doesn't include the connector, you can still use Subi's tags with the Mailchimp app for Shopify, as described further down.
In This Article:
How do I connect Mailchimp from Subi?
You connect Mailchimp from Settings > Integrations in Subi. The Mailchimp connector comes with the same plans as the Klaviyo connector. If the Mailchimp card shows a lock, upgrade your plan to use it.
Go to Settings > Integrations and click Configure on the Mailchimp card.
Click Connect Mailchimp, log in to Mailchimp and allow Subi access.
Back in Subi, pick the audience that should receive your subscribers and click Save audience.
When you save the audience, Subi adds every customer with an active subscription to it once, with their subscriber fields. From then on, Subi sends each new event as it happens. Subi adds contacts as non-subscribed (transactional) contacts and never changes the marketing status of a contact who is already in your audience. These contacts count toward your Mailchimp contact limit.
You can change the audience at any time with Change next to the audience name. Subi then adds your active subscribers to the new audience in the same way.
Which events does Subi send to Mailchimp?
Subi sends ten subscription events to Mailchimp. Each one arrives on the contact under the exact name shown on the Mailchimp page in Subi, so use that name when you set a journey's starting point. You can turn any event off with Deactivate and back on with Activate.
Started_Subscription: a customer starts a subscription
Canceled_Subscription: a subscription is canceled
Paused_Subscription: a subscription is paused
Resumed_Subscription: a paused subscription is resumed
Subscription_Skipped: the next order is skipped
Subscription_Expired: a subscription reaches its end
Upcoming_Subscription_Order: a subscription's next order is coming up
Subscription_Billing_Succeeded: a renewal payment goes through
Subscription_Payment_Failed: a renewal payment fails
Subscription_Recovery_Ended: payment recovery for a failed renewal ends
To see what Subi has sent, click View event history on the Mailchimp page. Each row shows the event, the customer, whether Mailchimp accepted it and when.
Which subscriber fields does Subi keep up to date?
When you pick an audience, Subi adds seven fields to it and keeps them up to date on every contact it sends. You can use them in emails as merge tags, for example *|SUBINEXTBD|*, or to build segments.
*|SUBIACTIVE|*: whether the customer has an active subscription (true or false)
*|SUBIACTCNT|*: how many active subscriptions the customer has
*|SUBINEXTBD|*: the date of the customer's next subscription order
*|SUBISTATE|*: the customer's subscription state: active, paused, cancelled or none
*|SUBIPAUCNT|*: how many paused subscriptions the customer has
*|SUBISINCE|*: the date the customer first subscribed
*|SUBIENDED|*: the date the customer's last subscription ended
Why did my journey start but send no email?
If a Mailchimp journey started for a contact but no email went out, the contact is most likely not subscribed to marketing. Mailchimp sends journey emails only to contacts who opted in to marketing. Subi adds contacts as non-subscribed, so their events still reach your journeys, and Mailchimp emails them once they subscribe.
What does Needs reconnect or Audience missing mean?
Needs reconnect: Mailchimp no longer accepts Subi's access, for example because Subi was removed from your Mailchimp account. Events are not delivered until you click Reconnect Mailchimp on the Mailchimp page and allow access again.
Audience missing: the audience Subi was sending to was deleted in Mailchimp. Pick another audience on the Mailchimp page to resume sending.
To stop sending, choose Disconnect on the Mailchimp page. Contacts already in your audience stay there, and you can reconnect at any time.
Where can I access the Mailchimp App?
You can install the Mailchimp app from this link. Then you need to connect Mailchimp to your Shopify store.

How does Mailchimp work?
When you use Mailchimp as your email marketing tool for Shopify, the first step is to set up your Mailchimp audience. Your audience is where all your contact data will be stored and managed—whether you’re starting fresh or importing existing contacts.
After you integrate your Shopify store with Mailchimp, your customers are automatically added to your Mailchimp audience. This makes it easy to organize, segment, and engage your Shopify customers directly from Mailchimp.
Customers who opt-in to receive email marketing at checkout are imported as subscribed contacts, while customers who choose not to receive email marketing will appear as non-subscribed contacts. Repeat customers will sync to Mailchimp as subscribed whether or not they reaccept marketing.
Tags, groups, and segments are the main audience management tools you’ll find in Mailchimp. Learn more about how they work together.
Tags are built for your own, internal audience organization. If you want your contacts to self-select an interest or category for themselves, use groups first and then apply tags as needed.
Groups can be used to sort subscribed contacts based on their interests and preferences. Only subscribed contacts can be added to groups, but unsubscribed contacts will retain their group designations.
You can use your audience information to filter contacts into segments, and then target them with email, postcards, or ad campaigns.
Without the connector: use Subi tags with the Mailchimp app
If your plan doesn't include the Mailchimp connector, you can sync Subi's customer and order tags to Mailchimp through the Mailchimp app for Shopify, in one of two ways.
Method 1: Mailchimp Tags & Groups
Use the Tags & Groups section in Mailchimp to defile rules based on Subi automated tags for orders and customers and create tags or interest groups in Mailchimp:
You can enable Subi automated orders or customer tags from Subi > Settings > Tag Management. Subi will then put automated tags on orders and customers that have a subscription product or membership.
You can enable 8 types of automatic tags in Subi for subscription orders and customers:
Customer tags | Order tags |
Any customer who's had at least one subscription. |
When the tag management is enabled, all the orders Subi creates are automatically tagged with "subi subscriptions". |
Any customer with an active subscription. |
The first order of a subscription plan gets tagged with "First subscription order". |
Any customer with a paused subscription. |
This tag defines the number of recurring orders in the customer's subscription: Recurring order #1, Recurring order #2, ... |
Any customer with A canceled subscription. |
Note that when you enable any of these tags, they will be applied to your future subscribers/members or subscription orders. Your existing customers and orders won't be updated. You can manually add these tags to your existing customers or use Shopify automation.
Using these tags, you can define a rule in the Mailchimp Shopify app based on actions about your subscribers or subscription orders:
Go to the Tags & Group tab on the Mailchimp app on Shopify.
Click on Build a Rule.
Define your rule criteria based on Subi order tags or customer tags.
Choose an action related to MailChimp (add customer tags or interest groups).
Save your rule.
Login to your MailChimp account and review the tags or interest groups you have added.
Run your campaigns and flows using these tags and groups.
Note that Mailchimp might take a couple of minutes to sync changes from its Shopify app to your Mailchimp account. If it takes too long, on the Mailchimp Shopify app, go to Account and click on Force Resync.
Method 2: Mailchimp- Shopify customer tag mapper
Use the Shopify Customer Tag Mapper section in Mailchimp to sync Subi automated tags for customers with your Mailchimp audience:
Go to the Shopify Customer Tag Mapper tab on the Mailchimp app on Shopify.
Add the Subi customer tags that you want to keep in sync with your Mailchimp audience.
Login to your MailChimp account and review the tags you have added.
Run your campaigns and flows using these tags.
Note that Mailchimp might take a couple of minutes to sync changes from its Shopify app to your Mailchimp account. If it takes too long, on the Mailchimp Shopify app, go to Account and click on Force Resync.
