How do I move my subscriptions to a new product price?

Move running subscriptions to a product's current price at their next order, with plan discounts kept and subscribers emailed first.

When you change a product's price in Shopify, the subscriptions already running on that product keep the price they started at. The Keep subscription prices in step with product prices card lets you choose which products' subscriptions move to today's price at their next order. Each line's plan discount still applies.

Where do I find the setting?

In Subi, open Retention → Payment recovery. The card is in the Recovery behaviour section. If your admin still shows the older menus, it is under Settings → Inventory & billing.

The setting is off for every store until you turn it on. Click Turn on at the top right of the card.

Nothing changes for your subscribers while the setting is off: no price moves and no email goes out until you turn it on and choose products. Once it is on, the card's title shows how many subscriptions you have not reviewed yet, for example 7 below today's price. Products you have already reviewed, and subscriptions that need a manual edit, are not counted.

How do I choose which subscriptions move to the new price?

Once the setting is on, Products behind today's price lists every product whose subscriptions pay a different price from the product's current price. Each row shows how many subscriptions it has, what they pay now, the product price and when the price changed.

  • Tick Move next to each product whose subscriptions should move, then click the button under the table, for example Move 12 subscriptions.

  • A product you leave unticked and save keeps its current subscription price until you change it yourself. Saving applies to every product on the page, so check the ticks before you click.

  • To take a product back, untick it and click Keep what they pay now.

  • To keep one subscriber on their current price, click the number in the Subscriptions column and clear Move this subscription for that subscription.

A product you pick keeps following its price. If you change its price again later, its subscriptions move again, with the same notice.

Do my subscribers get told before their price changes?

Yes. Under Tell subscribers first, choose when the email goes out: 3 days before the order, 7 days before the order (the default) or 14 days before the order. Each subscriber gets one email, Subscription price is changing, naming their old price, their new price and the date of the first order at the new price. You can edit this email in Settings → Notifications, like your other customer emails.

A subscriber is never charged more than the price their email named. If you raise the price again after the email went out, that order is not moved. The subscriber gets a new email naming a later order.

What happens if I choose not to email subscribers?

If you choose Don't email (lower prices only), only price decreases apply, at each subscription's next order. Price increases wait until you choose a notice period again and the email has been sent. Turning the Subscription price is changing email off in Settings → Notifications has the same effect.

Which subscriptions can't move automatically?

  • Subscriptions in a different currency from your store's. They are not listed. The card shows how many there are.

  • Lines with a fixed-amount or fixed-price discount. They show a Needs a manual edit badge. Change their price yourself with the Update price and discount bulk action on your subscriptions list.

How can I see which subscriptions have moved?

A product's row shows how many of its subscriptions moved in the last 30 days and the latest date. Each subscription's timeline also records the change, for example: "Subi updated the price of the product Coffee beans - 250g to $12.00 CAD with 10% discount, to follow the product price."
