Status: (Beta) core functionality available, with more improvements on the way

Upsells let subscribers add additional products to their next order with a single click. Upsell rules control which products are shown, who sees them, and how those products are added to customer orders.

Important: Upsells are currently shown only in billing reminder emails. More upsell locations, such as the customer portal and other pages, will be added in future updates.

How Subi upsells work

Upsells allow customers to add products to upcoming orders without going through checkout.

When a subscriber clicks an upsell:

  • The product is added automatically to their next orders

  • No checkout is required

  • Products already included in the upcoming orders are excluded

Upsell products are randomly selected from eligible products defined by your upsell rules.

Where upsells appear

Currently, upsells appear in:

  • Billing reminder emails

Planned future locations include:

  • Customer portal

  • Additional customer-facing pages

How upsell products are added to orders

Right now, all upsell products are added as subscriptions only.

  • The product is added to all upcoming subscription orders

  • One-time upsells are not supported yet

Coming soon: Subi will introduce the ability to add upsell products as a one-time item for the next order only, instead of a recurring subscription.

What are upsell rules

Upsell rules determine:

  • Which subscribers see upsells

  • Which products are eligible to appear

  • How many products are shown at a time

You can create multiple upsell rules and control their priority.

Set up upsells

  1. Go to Subi dashboard > Upsells

  2. Click Set up on the upsell card

  3. Click Create rule

  4. Choose your audience targeting:

    • All subscribers

    • Customers with specific products

    • Subscribers created within N days

    • Customers with Shopify tags

  5. Configure the promotion group type

  6. Choose the number of products to show

  7. Click Save

Promotion group type

Promotion groups define which products are eligible to appear as upsells. A promotion group is a collection of products promoted in the upsell carousel.

When creating a rule, choose one of the following promotion group types:

Selected product(s)

Manually choose specific products to promote.

  • Search or browse products to add them

  • Only selected products are eligible

  • Products already in the upcoming order are excluded automatically

Products with tag(s)

Automatically include products based on Shopify product tags.

  • Enter one or more product tags

  • Any product with those tags becomes eligible

  • Useful for managing upsells at scale

Best selling products

Automatically promote your best selling products.

  • If this option is unavailable, a yellow banner will prompt you to update app permissions

  • Merchants must update permissions to enable this option

  • Without updated permissions, best selling products cannot be used in upsell rules

Customer permissions required

Upsells require customer product permissions to be enabled.

  1. Go to Subi dashboard > Settings > Customer permissions > Products

  2. Enable Customers can add products

If this setting is disabled:

  • Upsells will not work

  • A warning banner will appear in the upsell setup

Optional:

  • Enable Customers can remove products to allow customers to remove upsell items from upcoming orders.

How products are selected

  • Products are randomly selected from eligible products in each rule

  • Products already in the next order are excluded

  • Upsells are always added as subscription items

Managing upsell rules

You can create and manage multiple upsell rules.

Upsell rule management includes:

  • Drag-and-drop rule ordering

  • Priority-based matching from top to bottom

Beta limitations

  • Upsells are currently limited to billing reminder emails

  • Upsell products can only be added as subscriptions

  • Analytics and reporting are limited

  • Audience targeting is basic but improving
