How do Subi upsells work?

Upsells in Subi allow subscribers to add additional products to their upcoming subscription order with a single click. Customers can add products directly from upsell widgets without going through checkout.

Upsell rules determine which products are shown, who sees them, and whether the product is added as a recurring subscription or a one-time purchase.

When a customer accepts an upsell:

  • The product is added directly to the existing subscription contract

  • No checkout is required

  • Products already included in the upcoming order are automatically excluded from the upsell offers

  • The product can be added as either a recurring subscription or a one-time purchase

This makes it easy for subscribers to increase the value of their upcoming order without interrupting their subscription flow.

Where do upsells appear?

Upsells can appear in two places where subscribers already manage their orders:

  1. Billing reminder emails

  2. Customer portal carousel

Billing reminder emails

A "You might also like" upsell widget appears in automated upcoming payment reminder emails. Customers can add recommended products directly from the email.

Customer portal carousel

Merchants can enable a "You might also like" carousel inside the Subi-hosted customer portal so customers can add products while managing their subscription.

Note: The carousel is currently available only for the Subi-hosted portal. Account Extension support is planned for a future update.

Purchase options: subscription or one-time purchase

When creating an upsell rule, you can choose how the product will be added to the customer's subscription.

Subscription

The product becomes part of the customer's subscription contract.

  • The product recurs at the same interval as the rest of the subscription

  • The item will be included in future subscription orders

  • The subscription continues until it is changed or cancelled

One-time purchase

The product is added only to the next upcoming order.

  • The item appears as "Available only in the next order" in the customer portal

  • The product does not recur in future orders

  • The item is removed automatically after the order is processed

Important notes:

  • Adding a one-time upsell may temporarily limit certain portal actions such as Edit Contract until the next order is processed

  • Customers cannot remove one-time upsells after they have been added

How upsell rules work

Upsell rules control who sees the offer and which products appear.

You can create multiple upsell rules and prioritize them by dragging and dropping them into order.

1. Audience targeting

Choose which subscribers should see the upsell.

Options include:

  • Everyone: All active subscribers

  • Subscribers with product(s): Customers who already have specific products

  • Subscribers created in the past N days: Newly created subscriptions

  • Customers with Shopify tag(s): Specific customer segments

2. Promotion group type

Define which products are eligible to appear in the upsell.

Available options include:

  • Selected product(s): Manually choose the products to promote

  • Products with tag(s): Automatically include Shopify products with selected tags

  • Best selling products: Automatically display top-performing products from your Shopify store

3. Incentives

You can offer a special discount when customers add products through the upsell widget.

Available incentives include:

  • Subscription discounts for recurring products

  • One-time discounts for products added to the next order

The upsell rule discount overrides the product’s standard selling plan discount for that transaction.

How to set up an upsell rule

  1. Go to Subi dashboard > Upsells.

  2. Click Create rule and enter a rule name.

  3. Select your Audience targeting option.

  4. Choose a Promotion group type and define the products to promote.

  5. Set the Purchase option to either Subscription or One-time purchase.

  6. Enter the discount percentage if you want to apply an incentive.

  7. Save the rule and adjust rule order if needed.

Customer permissions required

Upsells require customer product permissions to be enabled.

  1. Go to Subi dashboard > Settings > Customer permissions > Products

  2. Enable Customers can add products

If this setting is disabled:

  • Upsells will not work

  • A warning banner will appear in the upsell setup

Optional:

  • Enable Customers can remove products to allow customers to remove subscription upsell items from upcoming orders.

How to enable the customer portal upsell carousel

  1. Go to Subi dashboard > Upsells.

  2. Open the Settings tab.

  3. Enable Display upsell carousel in the customer portal.

  4. Customize the carousel title, such as "Add this to your next order!".

Once enabled, subscribers will see upsell recommendations directly in the customer portal when managing their subscriptions.

Frequently asked questions

Are upsells added as one-time products?

Yes. Upsell rules can offer products as a one-time purchase for the next order only.

Will customers see products they already subscribe to?

No. Subi automatically filters out products that already exist in the customer’s subscription contract.

Can I customize the discount for upsells?

Yes. Discounts defined in the upsell rule apply only when the product is added through the upsell widget.
