How do I prepare my Stripe subscriptions for migration to Subi?

Learn how to prepare your Stripe-based subscriptions so they can be migrated to Subi through Shopify.

Updated yesterday

If your subscriptions use Stripe, you’ll need to prepare them before migrating to Subi. This guide explains the requirements, how to remove your old app’s access, connect Stripe in Shopify, and include Stripe customer IDs in your migration template.

Note: These steps apply if your existing subscriptions are billed using Stripe. Subi will migrate them into Shopify Payments with Stripe connected as a secondary gateway.

When should I use this guide?

Use this guide if your subscriptions are currently billed through Stripe. These steps help Subi connect Stripe to Shopify, export your Stripe customer IDs, and ensure payments transfer smoothly during migration.

Before You Begin: Requirements

Before starting the migration process, make sure you have:

  1. Access to the Stripe account that stores your customers’ payment methods.

  2. At least one eligible payment method enabled for subscriptions in your Shopify store (e.g., Shopify Payments or Stripe).

Step 1: Remove old app access in Stripe

To prevent conflicts, remove your old subscription app’s access to your Stripe account:

  1. Log in to your Stripe Dashboard.

  2. Go to SettingsAuthorized Applications.

  3. Find your old subscription app and revoke access.

This ensures only Subi will manage payments after migration.

Step 2: Connect Stripe in Shopify

If your customers’ payment methods are stored in Stripe, you must connect Stripe as a secondary payment gateway in Shopify.

Steps:

  1. Open this URL in your browser, replacing {shop} with your Shopify store domain:
    https://admin.shopify.com/store/{shop}/payments/legacy_subscription

  2. You’ll be redirected to the Stripe connection page. Follow the prompts to complete the connection process.

  3. Once connected, you’ll be redirected back to Shopify’s payment settings, where Shopify will display a confirmation banner once Stripe is linked as a secondary gateway.

Step 3: Export Stripe customer IDs

You must add Stripe Customer IDs to the Subi Migration Template so your customers’ payment methods are linked correctly.

How to export Stripe IDs:

  1. Log in to your Stripe Dashboard and go to Stripe Customers.

  2. (Optional) Use Filter to refine the data.

  3. Click Export (top-right).

  4. Include Customer IDs, Emails, and Names in your export.

  5. Copy each Stripe Customer ID (which begins with cus_...) into the Subi Migration Template.

Step 4: Complete the Subi Migration Template

Once you have the Stripe IDs:

  • Add the Stripe IDs and fill in the remaining required fields.

  • Send the completed template to the Subi migration team with your migration request.
