How do I adjust the price or discount after a specific number of subscription payments?

Set up your subscriptions to automatically change the price or discount after a certain number of successful payments.

Updated this week

Overview

You can customize your subscription plans in Subi to change the price or discount after a set number of successful payments. This allows you to create offers like introductory discounts or one-time setup fees that automatically transition to your regular subscription pricing.

Currently, this feature is available for Subscribe & Save and Mystery Box plans, but Fixed Bundle plans only support the Offer Discount option (without a flat rate option), and Membership plans do not support this feature.

Common Applications

  • Free Trial: Offer the first month free by setting a 100% discount for the first payment.

  • Introductory Discount: Give a higher discount for the first few payments to encourage new subscribers.

  • Extra First Payment: Add a one-time fee to the first payment, such as for setup or special packaging.

  • Second Chance Subscription: Charge a higher price for the first subscription payment and automatically switch to a lower, regular price for following months.

How do I automatically adjust the discount or price for subscriptions?

Follow these steps in your Subi panel:

  1. Go to the Subscription Plans tab.

  2. Create a new subscription plan or select an existing one.

  3. Click on Add/Edit Selling Plan.

  4. Set the order frequency you want.

  5. Enable Offer Discount or Flat Rate (for Mystery Box and Subscribe & Save plans).

  6. Set the initial discount or flat rate:

    • Offer Discount: You can choose between:

      • Percentage Off: Define the percentage to discount from the original price (e.g., 50% off).

      • Fixed Amount: Define a specific amount to reduce from the original price (e.g., $5 off).

  7. Enable Adjust Price After Specified Number of Orders.

  8. In the Change To field, enter the new discount or flat rate for subsequent payments.

  9. In the After field, enter the number of successful payments after which the price or discount should change.

  10. Click Done and then Save the changes.

Note: Fixed Bundle plans only support the Offer Discount option and do not have the flat rate option.

An example of a price/discount adjustment

Suppose you want to offer 50% off for the first three payments, then 10% off afterward:

  • The customer pays 50% of the product price for their first three successful subscription payments.

  • After the third successful payment, the discount automatically changes to 10% for all future payments.

  • If your pricing strategy involves a one-time setup fee or introductory price, set a special price or discount for the first order. After the first payment, standard pricing resumes automatically.

Note: Editing a subscription plan will not affect existing active subscriptions—changes apply only to new subscriptions created after your update.

How does the price adjustment appear to customers?

When you set a price or discount to change after a specific number of orders, the subscription widget on your product page displays a description in its footer. This description explains how the price or discount will change after the specified number of successful payments.

What happens if a payment fails or is skipped?

  • Only successful payments count toward changing the discount or price.

  • If a payment is skipped or fails, it does not count. The price or discount changes only after the required number of successful payments.

Conditional Subscription Scenarios

For advanced pricing models:

  • Double Pricing for First Order: Set a higher price for the first payment, then switch to a lower, regular price using the “Change price after X payments” feature.

  • Product Variants: If different product variants need unique prices, create individual selling plans and use the “Offer Discount” feature for each.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Are there limitations in adjusting subscription pricing?
A: While you can automate most discount and pricing changes, adjusting shipping charges between initial and recurring payments isn’t directly supported. You can use workarounds like Shopify Flow or manual adjustments to address this limitation.

Q: How do I set up different pricing for the first and later subscription orders?
A: Set the initial price or discount in the “Change To” field for subsequent orders. In the “After” field, set how many successful payments need to be made before the price or discount changes (e.g., enter “1” to change after the first order).

Q: Are there any workarounds for advanced subscription pricing scenarios?
A: Yes, you can use the following workarounds:

  • Automate free shipping after the first order using Shopify Flow.

  • Use manual discount codes for unique order requirements not covered by built-in settings.
