How Subi Upsells Work

Learn how Subi upsells let subscribers add products to upcoming orders with one click, including recurring subscriptions or one-time purchases.

How do Subi upsells work?

Upsells in Subi allow subscribers to add additional products to their upcoming subscription order with a single click. Customers can add products directly from upsell widgets without going through checkout.

Upsell rules determine which products are shown, who sees them, and whether the product is added as a recurring subscription or a one-time purchase.

Where to find it: open Subi > Growth and click the Upsell rules tile. Upsells no longer appears as a top-level nav item — it now lives inside the Growth hub. Old /upsells and /upsells/rules bookmarks still work and redirect to the new Growth-hub location.

When a customer accepts an upsell:

  • The product is added directly to the existing subscription contract

  • No checkout is required

  • Products already included in the upcoming order are automatically excluded from the upsell offers, except for the stock-up row, which offers one more of the subscriber's own product (see below)

  • The product can be added as either a recurring subscription or a one-time purchase

This makes it easy for subscribers to increase the value of their upcoming order without interrupting their subscription flow.

Where do upsells appear?

Upsells can appear in two places where subscribers already manage their orders:

  1. Billing reminder emails

  2. Customer portal carousel

Billing reminder emails

A "You might also like" upsell widget appears in automated upcoming payment reminder emails. Customers can add recommended products directly from the email.

Customer portal carousel

Merchants can show add-ons on each subscription's page in the Subi-hosted customer portal, so customers can add products while managing their subscription. Unless you set your own title, the section is titled with the date of the customer's next order, for example "Add to your November 13, 2026 delivery". What adding a product does depends on the purchase option your upsell rule allows: a one-time add-on goes to that next order only, a subscription add-on is added to the subscription itself, and when your rule allows both the customer chooses, with one-time offered first. Customers can pick a variant, see the discount your upsell rule gives them, and open View all to choose several add-ons at once.

Note: The carousel is currently available only for the Subi-hosted portal. Account Extension support is planned for a future update.

Can subscribers add one more of the product they already get?

Yes. When the add-ons show to your subscribers, the first row of the portal add-on section and of the billing reminder's add-on block is the subscriber's own subscribed product, marked In your subscription with the note One more, for this order only. Clicking Add one adds one unit to the next order only, at the price and subscription discount the subscriber already pays; the button then reads Added. The subscription itself does not change, and later orders keep their usual quantity.

  • Each product can be added once per order. If the next order is rescheduled or skipped, the subscriber can add it again for the new next order.

  • If your Inventory policy does not place orders for out-of-stock products, and at renewal the product does not have enough stock for the extra unit, the order goes ahead with the subscriber's usual quantity and the extra unit is neither shipped nor charged. The subscriber is not sent a separate message about it.

  • The row follows Display upsell carousel in the customer portal: with it on, the row shows in the portal, and also in the billing reminder when Display upsell widget is on there too. Turning Display upsell carousel in the customer portal off hides the row in both places; turning only Display upsell widget off hides it in the email only. Change product quantity in Customer permissions does not affect this row, so customers can add one more even when they cannot change their subscription quantity. The row appears even if you have no upsell rule.

  • It is not offered on prepaid subscriptions, or for Build-a-box, fixed bundle or volume discount products.

  • For orders billed from December 2 to December 29, 2026, the row opens with the line Stock up before the holidays.

To hide the row, switch off the matching toggle in Subi > Growth > Upsell rules > Settings. Both toggles work on every plan; the lock icon on those cards applies to the block titles only.

Purchase options: subscription or one-time purchase

When creating an upsell rule, you can choose how the product will be added to the customer's subscription.

Subscription

The product becomes part of the customer's subscription contract.

  • The product recurs at the same interval as the rest of the subscription

  • The item will be included in future subscription orders

  • The subscription continues until it is changed or cancelled

One-time purchase

The product is added only to the next upcoming order.

  • The item appears as "Available only in the next order" in the customer portal

  • The product does not recur in future orders

  • The item is removed automatically after the order is processed

Important notes:

  • Adding a one-time upsell may temporarily limit certain portal actions such as Edit Contract until the next order is processed

  • Customers cannot remove one-time upsells after they have been added

  • You can remove one for the customer from the subscription's page in Subi (see Can I remove a one-time product from a subscription's next order? below)

How upsell rules work

Upsell rules control who sees the offer and which products appear.

You can create multiple upsell rules and prioritize them by dragging and dropping them into order.

1. Audience targeting

Choose which subscribers should see the upsell.

Options include:

  • Everyone: All active subscribers

  • Subscribers with product(s): Customers who already have specific products

  • Subscribers created in the past N days: Newly created subscriptions

  • Customers with Shopify tag(s): Specific customer segments

2. Promotion group type

Define which products are eligible to appear in the upsell.

Available options include:

  • Selected product(s): Manually choose the products to promote

  • Products with tag(s): Automatically include Shopify products with selected tags

  • Best selling products: Automatically display top-performing products from your Shopify store. Products that are Draft, Archived or Unlisted in Shopify, and variants priced at 0, are never suggested as best sellers.

3. Incentives

You can offer a special discount when customers add products through the upsell widget.

Available incentives include:

  • Subscription discounts for recurring products

  • One-time discounts for products added to the next order

The upsell rule discount overrides the product’s standard selling plan discount for that transaction.

How to set up an upsell rule

  1. Go to Subi > Growth > Upsell rules. (If you bookmarked the old Subi dashboard > Upsells location, that link still works and will redirect you to the new page.)

  2. Click Create rule and enter a rule name.

  3. Select your Audience targeting option.

  4. Choose a Promotion group type and define the products to promote.

  5. Set the Purchase option to either Subscription or One-time purchase.

  6. Enter the discount percentage if you want to apply an incentive.

  7. Save the rule and adjust rule order if needed.

Customer permissions required

Upsells require customer product permissions to be enabled.

  1. Go to Subi dashboard > Settings > Customer permissions > Products

  2. Enable Customers can add products

    Subi logo

If this setting is disabled:

  • Upsells will not work

  • A warning banner will appear in the upsell setup

Optional:

  • Enable Customers can remove products to allow customers to remove subscription upsell items from upcoming orders.

How to enable the customer portal upsell carousel

  1. Go to Subi > Growth > Upsell rules.

  2. Open the Settings tab.

  3. Enable Display upsell carousel in the customer portal.

  4. Customize the carousel title, such as "Add this to your next order!".

Once enabled, subscribers will see upsell recommendations directly in the customer portal when managing their subscriptions.

Frequently asked questions

Are upsells added as one-time products?

Yes. Upsell rules can offer products as a one-time purchase for the next order only.

Will customers see products they already subscribe to?

Not among your upsell rule's products: Subi filters out products that already exist in the customer’s subscription contract. The one exception is the stock-up row, which offers one more unit of the subscriber's own product for the next order only.

Can I remove a one-time product from a subscription's next order?

Yes. If a customer added a one-time product through an upsell offer or the stock-up row, you can take it off their next order. Open the subscription in Subi and find the product in the Next order card, under Items, marked Available for next order. Click its trash icon (Remove from next order) and confirm with Remove. Only that next order changes: the subscription's own products, prices and next order date stay the same, and the order total drops by the product's price.

  • The trash icon appears only on products added through an upsell offer or the stock-up row. Other items on the next order, such as a streak reward or an item another app added, have none.

  • The trash icon is hidden when the card's Edit items button is unavailable.

  • After you remove the last one-time product, changing the subscription's products can stay locked until that next order is processed.

  • Customers still cannot remove these items themselves in the customer portal.

Why doesn't a free or hidden product appear in my best sellers upsell?

Best sellers upsells never suggest products that are Draft, Archived or Unlisted in Shopify, or product variants priced at 0, even when they sold a lot in the last 30 days. This applies to the default best sellers offer in billing reminder emails and the customer portal, and to your own upsell rules that use Best selling products. If a best-selling product has both a free variant and a paid one, customers see and can add only the paid variant, and the email shows the paid variant's price. To offer a free product on purpose, for example a gift, use an upsell rule with Selected product(s) or Products with tag(s) instead.

Can I customize the discount for upsells?

Yes. Discounts defined in the upsell rule apply only when the product is added through the upsell widget.
