Overview
In Subi, you can set different shipping rates for subscribers compared to one-time product buyers. This guide shows you how to set up subscription shipping in Subi: free shipping for the plans you choose, or your own custom rates, so you can encourage customers to subscribe with tailored shipping options.
How It Works
One-time purchases are processed through your Shopify checkout and use Shopify's shipping settings. Subscription orders can use their own rates instead: on Subi's Subscription shipping page you give the plans you choose free shipping, or create a custom shipping profile that only applies to subscriptions. A custom profile can use any rate Shopify offers:
International rates
Custom rates
Price-based rates
Weight-based rates
Free shipping rates
Important Notes:
If you already have shipping profiles set up in Shopify, Subi creates a distinct shipping profile that only applies to subscriptions.
The subscription shipping profile does not impact your existing shipping profiles.
A subscription's shipping price is set at checkout and kept for its recurring orders.
Changing which plans use a profile applies to new subscriptions only. Current subscribers keep their shipping price.
Where to Find Subscription Shipping in Subi
To find your subscription shipping settings, open your Subi panel, go to Settings and click Shipping. The page is called Subscription shipping and has two cards: Free shipping and Custom shipping rates.
Every row on the page tells you its status with a badge, so you can see at a glance which shipping is active at checkout:
On or Off on the free shipping row: On means at least one plan ships free, Off means no plans are chosen yet.
In use on a custom profile: the profile has plans, and the row lists them, for example "Plans: Monthly box, Coffee club, Snack pack and 2 more".
Not in use on a custom profile: the profile has no plans yet, so it does nothing at checkout until you finish its setup.
How to Offer Free Shipping on Subscription Orders
To give subscription orders free shipping, choose the plans that should ship free in the Free shipping card. Orders from the plans you choose ship free to every country.
From your Subi panel, go to Settings > Shipping.
In the Free shipping card, click the Plans with free shipping row.
In the Choose plans for free shipping window, check the subscription plans that should ship free and click Save.
The row's badge then reads On and the row lists the plans you chose. To stop free shipping for a plan, open the same row, uncheck the plan and click Save.
If your store has no subscription plans yet, the card shows Create a subscription plan first instead. Clicking it takes you to your plan list, where you can create your first plan.
You can also turn on free shipping for a single plan from the Plans tab of your Subi panel. This works for Subscribe & Save, Mystery Box and Fixed Bundle plans:
Open the plan, or create a new one.
In the right column, click the Free shipping on subscription orders row. Its badge shows On or Off for this plan.
Check Offer free shipping on subscription orders and click Save changes.
Click Save on the plan page. The setting is only stored when the plan is saved.
If the checkbox is greyed out, your current Subi plan doesn't include free shipping, or Subi hasn't been given access to your shipping settings yet. In that case the window shows an upgrade option, or a banner with an Update now button to grant access.
Create a Custom Subscription Shipping Profile
To charge your own shipping rates on subscriptions, like a flat fee or a rate per country, use the Custom shipping rates card. Setting up a custom profile takes three steps: create the profile in Subi, add its rates in Shopify, then choose its plans in Subi.
Step 1: Create the profile in Subi
From your Subi panel, go to Settings > Shipping.
In the Custom shipping rates card, click Create shipping profile.
Enter a Profile name and click Create. The name shows in Shopify under Settings > Shipping and delivery, so pick one you will recognize there.
The new profile appears in the card with a Not in use badge and the line "Finish setup: add its rates in Shopify, then choose its plans."
Step 2: Add its rates in Shopify
On the new profile's row, click Set rates in Shopify. This opens the profile in Shopify's Shipping and delivery settings.
Set your preferred rates and shipping zones.
Important note: Do not add any products to the profile in Shopify. If you do, one-time orders of those products use these rates too.
You can add as many zones and shipping rates as you want:
Step 3: Choose its plans in Subi
Return to Settings > Shipping in your Subi panel and click the profile's row.
In the Choose plans for window (it carries your profile's name), check the subscription plans that should use this profile and click Save.
The profile's badge changes to In use and the row lists its plans. From now on, new subscriptions to those plans get this profile's rates at checkout.
Add the profile's rates in Shopify before you choose its plans. If you open a profile that is still Not in use, the window warns you with "Add its rates in Shopify first": customers in a country the profile has no rate for can't check out the plans you choose there.
Choosing Plans for a Shipping Profile
Each subscription plan uses one shipping profile at a time. When you choose plans for a profile, the window shows every plan with its type, such as Subscribe & save or Build a box. A plan that already uses another profile shows "Now in" followed by that profile's name; choosing it moves it to the profile you are editing.
If you have more than 10 plans, a search field at the top helps you find a plan by name.
Changing a profile's plans affects new subscriptions only. Current subscribers keep their shipping price. To change it for them, use the change it in bulk on Contracts link in the same window (see the section on existing subscriptions below).
Changing the Rates of a Profile That Is In Use
You can only change a custom profile's rates in Shopify while no subscription plan uses it. An In use profile shows "To change its rates in Shopify, remove its plans first." To change its rates:
Click the profile's row in Settings > Shipping, uncheck all its plans and click Save. The badge changes to Not in use.
Click Set rates in Shopify and edit the rates and zones in Shopify's Shipping and delivery settings.
Return to Subi, click the profile's row, choose its plans again and click Save.
Shipping Profile Result
Customers will see separate shipping sections for one-time purchases and subscriptions on your Shopify checkout page. Separate shipping rates will apply to both checkout and recurring orders.
Shopify checkout, by default, displays the cheapest shipping option for subscriptions at checkout. So you can not offer multiple shipping options for subscription products:
- The choice between home delivery and pickup
- The choice between different shipping vendors
- The choice between slower and faster shipping methods
- The choice of your favorite pickup place
Local Delivery and Pickup
You can offer local delivery or pickup at checkout by enabling Delivery Methods in Shopify. Once this feature is activated, eligible checkout orders will have the option for local delivery or pickup, and the same method will be applied to recurring orders as well.
Learn more about configuring local delivery methods here in the Shopify Help Center.
Limitations of Free Shipping for Subsequent Payments
Currently, free shipping applies to all payments once enabled. The app doesn’t support automatic configuration for subsequent orders.
Workaround:
Manually apply a free shipping discount code after the first order.
Automate the process using Shopify Flow, ensuring subscription tags are active for functionality.
Adding Free Shipping Labels to Subscription Options on the Widget
To indicate that subscription products qualify for free shipping, you can add a "Free Shipping" label to subscription options. This customization can be implemented using code and will typically appear on all subscription widgets once configured.
If the app embed is active, developers or the support team can securely make these updates using CSS.
What If I Want to Change the Shipping for Existing Subscriptions?
Changes on the Subscription shipping page apply to new subscriptions only, because current subscribers keep the shipping price they got at checkout. To change shipping for existing subscriptions, you can update many contracts at once:
Open Contracts in your Subi panel and select the subscriptions you want to change.
Open Bulk actions and choose Update shipping price.
Enter the new Shipping price and click Apply changes, then confirm.
To change a single subscription instead, open the contract, click Edit and update the shipping price under the Subscription Details section.
Troubleshooting the Subscription Shipping Page
The page asks me to give Subi access to my shipping settings
If you see the banner "Give Subi access to your shipping settings", Subi doesn't have Shopify's shipping access yet. Subi needs this access to create shipping profiles and apply free shipping in Shopify. Click Give access and approve the request in Shopify. Until then, Create shipping profile stays disabled.
A card shows a lock badge
Free shipping and custom shipping rates are each included in specific Subi plans. If your plan doesn't include one of them, its card shows a lock badge next to the title and its rows can't be changed. Click the lock badge to see the plans that include the feature. A profile that is Not in use still keeps its Set rates in Shopify button.
Creating a profile fails
If a profile name is already used, the Profile name field shows "A shipping profile with this name already exists. Please choose a different name." Enter a different name and click Create. If you see "We couldn't create this profile. Please try again.", your name is kept in the window, so click Create again. If it keeps failing, contact our support team.
