Yes. You can let shoppers buy a subscription as a gift for someone else, straight from the Subscribe & Save widget on your product pages. The shopper ticks Send as a gift, types who it's for, and that person gets one email from your store when the subscription starts. The buyer keeps paying and keeps receiving every other subscription email.
How do I turn on gift subscriptions?
Gifting is off until you turn it on. To turn it on:
In Subi, open your Subscribe & Save widget's customization and go to the Design tab.
Find Let shoppers send it as a gift, right after Show saving as an amount, and switch it on.
Save. The live preview shows the gift box under the subscription option straight away.
While the switch is off, the row reads "Shoppers buy subscriptions for themselves only." and nothing on your storefront changes. The switch only exists for the Subscribe & Save widget.
What does the shopper see on the product page?
When a shopper picks a subscription option, a Send as a gift checkbox appears below the plan. It does not appear for a one-time purchase. When they tick it, they fill in:
Their name, the person the gift is for (required).
Their email, where that person gets the gift email (required).
Gift message (optional), up to 200 characters.
Your name, how the recipient sees who sent the gift (required).
The box also reminds the shopper to enter the recipient's address as the shipping address at checkout. If the box is ticked but a required field is empty, or the email is not valid, the product is not added to the cart and the field shows what to fix.
What email does the recipient get?
When the subscription starts, the recipient gets one email from your store. It greets them by name, says who sent the gift, using the name the shopper typed in Your name, shows the gift message if there is one, and names the product and how often it ships. It also tells them the buyer pays. The recipient gets this email only once, and gets no other subscription emails. Billing, reminders, failed-payment emails and the customer portal all stay with the buyer.
Can I edit the gift email?
Yes. Go to Settings › Notifications › Email. In the Subscription starts card you'll see Gift subscription, marked Always on: it is sent whenever gifting is on, so it has no switch of its own. Open it to reach Edit customer gift subscription, where you can change the subject and the content, preview it and send yourself a test email. The default subject is "[the name from Your name] sent you a gift subscription". The Design tab's gift row also links there through "Customize this email in notification settings."
Where do I see who a subscription is for?
The recipient's name, email and gift message, and the sender's name the shopper typed, appear on the order's line item in your Shopify admin, as Gift recipient name, Gift recipient email, Gift note and Gift sender name. They stay on every renewal order of that subscription too.
Does a gift order earn a referral reward?
No. An order sent as a gift does not earn referral credit, because the person receiving it did not choose to subscribe.
How long does a gift subscription last?
A gift subscription works like any other subscription: same price, same delivery schedule, and it renews until it is cancelled. To sell a gift that ends on its own, offer a plan that ends after a set number of payments. If you already use Givy for gifting, see Sell Gift Subscriptions with Subi and Givy Integration.
