What Is Checkout Upgrade?

Checkout Upgrade is a Shopify Checkout UI extension that:

  • Detects products added as one-time purchases

  • Checks if a subscription (selling plan) is available

  • Displays an inline “Upgrade to subscription” option

  • Lets customers switch with one click

When clicked:

  • The one-time item is replaced with the subscription

  • The selling plan is applied automatically

  • Pricing updates instantly

  • Checkout continues without interruption

No cart edits. No page reload.


Where It Appears

The upgrade option appears:

  • Inside the checkout order summary

  • Directly under the eligible product

  • As a clean inline link (e.g. Upgrade to subscription – save up to 20%)

  • Styled to match Shopify’s native checkout


How to Add Checkout Upgrade

Step 1: Open Checkout Editor

  1. Go to Shopify Admin

  2. Navigate to Settings → Checkout

  3. Click Customize checkout


Step 2: Add the Block

  1. Open the Apps section

  2. Find Checkout Upgrade

  3. Click + Add block

  4. Place it in your layout

  5. Click Save

The feature is now active.


How It Works

The upgrade appears only if:

  • The product was added as a one-time purchase

  • An active subscription selling plan exists

  • The plan is available in the customer’s market

  • The product variant supports selling plans

Each eligible product in checkout can display its own upgrade option.


Settings

Include block in Shop Pay (toggle)

  • ON → Attempts to show in Shop Pay (subject to Shopify limitations)

  • OFF → Shows only in standard Shopify checkout


Important Limitations

Checkout Upgrade will not appear if:

  • The product has no active selling plan

  • The variant does not support subscriptions

  • The selling plan is unavailable in the customer’s market

  • The block is not added in the Checkout Editor

  • The product is a Membership product

Display in accelerated checkouts (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay) may vary based on Shopify restrictions.


FAQ

Does this change my product page?

No. It works only inside checkout.

Can customers undo the upgrade?

Yes. Customers can edit their cart before completing checkout.

Why isn’t the upgrade showing?

Check:

  • Subscription selling plan is active

  • Product was added as one-time purchase

  • Checkout block is saved

  • Variant supports selling plans

  • Not a Membership product

If all conditions are met, test with a new checkout session.
